According to a report by America's Department of Education, 83% of all ESL students, who attend

universities in the United States, will end up flunking out of school before they earn their degrees. The biggest reason for this, the report cites, is due to their inability to write papers in the academic English needed to get a passing grade.

This sad fact is, even if you are an ESL student who is fluent in conversational English, such fluency alone will not guarantee you academic success. To write in the academic English needed to get passing grades at the university level requires a skill far greater than the skill required for merely good conversational English, and the grim truth is that skill is hard to teach and even harder to master. It is so hard to learn, in fact, that most native speakers, even those who are very bright, cannot write good academic papers. Therefore, if you are an ESL student studying in the United States (or any English-speaking country for that matter) you are almost certain to fail.
